Mountain Bike Tracks

E-mail Print PDF

The Denniston MTB tracks have been established by the Buller Cycling Club Inc. (BCC) in partnership with the Department of Conservation (DoC).

BCC presented a proposal to set up the MTB tracks to DoC in August 2006. In December 2007 the proposal became a reality.

The Dennison plateau has been used for many years by local MTB riders, who have enjoyed the abundant attractions this area has to offer. The development of these tracks by BCC and DoC has now made these areas more accessible for everyone.

Denniston is a unique area that has a long history of coal mining and human endeavour, superimposed on a spectacular natural landscape. The Denniston plateau is renowned for being a place that has many different “moods”. These range from wild and desolate during a storm, to calm and serene during a fine sunset. These all add to the attraction and adventure of riding at Denniston. (But don’t take our word for it – go and experience it for yourself).

A key part of the philosophy of developing the Denniston MTB tracks has been to leave the area in its existing condition as much as possible and to retain the adventure and challenge of Denniston. So most of the tracks at Denniston are still in much the same condition as we originally found them. They have not been significantly upgraded, manicured or smoothed out. Track markers and route guides have been provided to assist with navigation. Riders still need to bring a sense of adventure and be prepared take responsibility for their own destiny and safety.

As you can see, we still have some work to do to upgrade this website. But hey its summer, and there are heaps of other more important things to do around here, like biking and hanging out at the beach for instance. For now, the following information is all you need to get started at Denniston.

We have also included a few photos to give you some idea of what the area looks like and the awesome terrain available. If you are looking for somewhere to explore leisurely with your family, or you want a darn good cross country work out on your latest hi-tech MTB, then you’ll find a track to enjoy at Denniston.

So come and enjoy the challenge of Denniston ! and just so you know how to get there, here is a Westport to Denniston map.

And finally if you wish to discuss anything MTB in the Buller, then have a look at our MTB discussion forum .
